Just Be Kind

I saw a bumper sticker recently that said, “Be Kind.” It’s a powerful message captured in just two simple words. It got me thinking, though, about what precisely that phrase means to people.
To some, it may simply be a reminder to express kindness to people who look like them, think like them, act like them, worship like them, and essentially disregard everyone else.
To others, though, the phrase calls for them to offer their kindness to everyone they encounter, whether or not the recipients of their kindness share any of their own characteristics. Kindness to strangers, especially those who are in the greatest need, is a hallmark of a civil and caring society.
We as Democrats are always striving to be the latter, offering assistance to whomever is in need. Whether that’s a kind word, a smile, a simple act of kindness, or a donation of goods or services, basically anything that makes someone else’s life better or easier.
We have an opportunity to do that with La Tiendita in east McKinney. Now through Aug. 8, Lisa West is spearheading a donation drive of snacks and backpacks for grade school kids who live in that area.
Find out how you can help, and be kind.
On that topic, we can also show kindness to our new hosts for Happy Hour. Ordering food and drinks, and being generous with our tips to the servers at Neon Cactus is yet another way we can demonstrate our warm-heartedness. And, developing a good relationship with the staff at Neon Cactus can certainly help when we inevitably look for friendly venues for our other activities.
In solidarity,
